When I started my career at DERA in 2000 I was fortunate to have Dan in the same group. We became good friends and misspent many weekends bombing down to Polzeath for camping and surfing. He was an usher at my wedding and someone I could always rely as a friend and confidant. Though over time we drifted, whenever we did meet, it always felt like no time had passed. I’ll miss you mate.

I have known Dan for many years though work on High Performance Computing and collaboration on his cutting edge calculations. He was always driven and charismatic, and a great champion for his work. In recent months we had been working on a new partnership to provide next generation supercomputers, something that we will pursue now in his memory. Dan remains an inspiration, I will miss him.

I only worked for Dan for 1 year in 2007 and yet we remained pals and I always knew that I could count on him to support me both professionally and as a friend. In my entire working life, no one has had a more profound impact on my career. Dan was both inspirational and kind, genuinely investing in those around him. Dan was an all-round impressive person – physically and mentally. An expert in his scientific field and yet also enjoyed deep debate comparing favourite monarchs of all time. Thank you, Dan, for believing in me and for being my buddy in the R&B room at the Chapel. I will miss you.
